For Immediate Release: January 18th, 2007 Ashland, WI. – The University of Minnesota, Morris men’s basketball team scored 11 of the games first 13 points last Friday, January 18th to take a nine point lead at 11-2 following a Phil Allen (Jr. Clarissa, Minn.) basket and never looked back in a 92-82 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) road win over Northland College.

Later in the half, an old fashioned three-point play by Will Jenson (Sr. Eau Claire, Wis.) and a Phil Allen basket gave UMM at 18 point lead at 39-21 with 7:26 left before halftime.

Minnesota, Morris shot a blistering 58.6 percent (17-29) from the field in the first 20 minutes of the game, and connected on sic of their nine (66.7 %) three point attempts in the first half to open up a 52-38 advantage at the break.

The Cougars did cool down a bit in the second half and the Lumberjacks cut the deficit to five at 66-61 with 12:19 to play in the second half, but the Cougars put together a 7-1 run and pushed the lead back to double figures at 73-62 with 9:45 left to play on a Jenson three-point basket.

Northland made another run at the Cougars and made it a one possession game with just over six minutes to play at 77-75.

Free-throw shooting down the stretch for the Cougars helped seal the win as UMM connected on 10-of-13 from the line in the final six minutes for the game for the 10 point win.

Will Jenson led the way with a game high 26 for UMM. He was 9-of-13 (69 %) from the field for the game, including 3-of-4 from beyond the three-point strip and a perfect 5-for-5 at the line.

Eric Dalbey (So. Mora, Minn.) added 20 and Phil Allen tossed in 14 for the Cougars.

For the game, Minnesota, Morris shot 56 percent (27-48) from the floor and 10-of-17 from three point range. But the telling stat came at the free-throw line as UMM was 28-of-36 at the charity stripe (77.8 %) for the game, compared to Northland 16-of-20 at the line.

The Cougars forced the Lumberjacks into 16 turnovers in the game and turned that into 24 points.
