For Immediate Release: January 19th, 2007 Duluth, MN. – The College of St. Scholastica held the Cougars men’s team to just 33 second half points last Saturday in a 93-76 win in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) college basketball action.
The loss was the first in conference play for the Cougars this season and ended the Cougars three game win streak.
Eric Dalbey (So. Mora, Minn.) gave Minnesota, Morris a four point lead at 19-15 just over six minutes into the ball game with his second straight three-pointer of the game.
After the saints had taken a 26-25 lead, Phil Allen’s (Jr. Clarissa, Minn.) lay-up and free-throw put UMM in front by a pair at 28-26 with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
With the Cougars clinging on to a 31-30 lead with 6:37 left before halftime, CSS out scored UMM 20-8 to close out the half with a 50-3 lead.
Both teams shot very well from the floor in the first half, St. Scholastica connected at a 55.2 percent clip while Minnesota, Morris was 16-of-31 (51.6%) in the first 20 minutes of action. But the Saints were 15-of-17 at the line, while UMM was just 8-of-10 in the half.
The Cougars started strong in the second half connecting on their first three shots in the half and with just under 90 seconds elapsed off the clock in the second half, the Saints lead was cut to two at 52-50 after a Corey Kelzenberg (Sr. Fridley, Minn.) three-point basket after a Will Jenson (Sr. Eau Claire, Wis.) steal.
That would be as close as the Cougars would get as the Saints held Minnesota, Morris to just 37 percent shooting in the second half and pulled away for the win.
The Saints had a 24-7 advantage in bench scoring in the game but UMM had a 44-32 edge in points in the paint.
Phil Allen had a career high 35 points for the Cougars to lead all scorers. He was 14-of-22 from the field (63.6 %) and 7-for-11 at the line. Eric Dalbey was the only other Cougar in double fires with 19.
St. Scholastica had five players in double digits.
Minnesota, Morris (8-7, 4-1 UMAC) will now host Crown College this Friday, January 25th at 7:30 at the UMM P.E> Center and then league leader Northwestern College Saturday at 5:00. The Cougars are tied for second in the UMAC with St. Scholastica at 4-1, one game behind Northwestern who enters this weekends action unbeaten in league play at 5-0.
