New Ulm, MN—The University of Minnesota-Morris men’s basketball team was handed a setback in UMAC competition with a 97-65 loss at the hands of Martin Luther College on Friday.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 6-4 in UMAC play and 11-10 overall.
Leading the scoring for UMM were Will Jenson (Sr. Eau Claire, WI) with 15 points and Phil Allen (Jr. Clarissa, MN) with 11.
Joey Fragodt (So. Benson, MN) and Jeremy Bosch (So. Salol, MN) had five rebounds apiece in the contest.
Martin Luther took control of the game from the tip-off, going on a 16-3 run in the opening six minutes. A jump-shot from Eric Dalbey (So. Mora, MN) put the score at 25-12 with 9:29 remaining, but that was as close as the Cougars would get for the rest of the half.
After a layup with five seconds left on the first half clock, Martin Luther took a 53-25 lead into the locker room.
Allen (nine points) led the first half scoring for Minnesota-Morris, while Daron Zych (Sr. Graceville, MN) grabbed two rebounds in the half.
Martin Luther maintained a 20+ point lead in the opening minutes of the second half due to multiple missed Cougar shots.
Points from Jordan Noonan (So. Richfield, MN) and Jenson put the score at 66-43 with 13:37 on the clock, but the home team would only increase their lead for the rest of the half. A Martin Luther layup in the closing seconds put the final score at 97-65.
Jenson (11 points) and Noonan (nine) led UMM’s second half scoring.
Minnesota-Morris shot at a 26-74 (35.1%) clip from the floor compared to Martin Luther’s 39-69 (56.5%).
