Morris, MN—Despite being on their home court for the first time in five contests, the University of Minnesota-Morris men’s basketball team fell 79-64 against St. Scholastica on Friday.
Strong performances from Eric Dalbey (So. Mora, MN) and Will Jenson (Sr. Eau Claire, WI), both scoring 18 points, led the Cougars in scoring.
Jenson also grabbed nine rebounds in the contest, while Corey Kelzenberg (Sr. Fridley, MN), Joey Fragodt (So. Benson, MN), and Jeremy Bosch (So. Salol, MN) had three rebounds apiece.
St. Scholastica held a slim lead for the opening portion of the second half. Two free-throw shots from Dalbey pulled the Cougars to within one point (13-12) in the early goings, but the visitors would up the lead to 24-14 with 10:34 remaining.
A layup from Daniel Fragodt (Fr. Benson, MN) put the score at 28-22 in favor of St. Scholastic with 6:00 left in the half. A late three-point shot from the visitors, however, would put the halftime score at 39-26.
Dalbey (seven points) led the first half scoring, followed by Jenson, Daniel Fragodt, and Phil Allen (Jr. Clarissa, MN) with four points apiece.
St. Scholastica only increased its lead as the second half began, putting the score at 63-39 with 11:49 remaining. Two free-throws from Jenson brought the Cougars to within 14 points (72-58) with 4:15 left to play, but that was as close as the home team would get for the rest of the game.
A layup from Bosch closed the scoring at 79-64.
Jenson (14 points) and Dalbey (11) led Minnesota-Morris in second half scoring. Jenson nabbed five boards in the half, while Bosch grabbed three and Daron Zych (Sr. Graceville, MN) had two.
UMM shot 24-59 (40.7%) from the floor, compared to the 48% of St. Scholastica. The Cougars were outscored 17-12 off the bench.
The loss dropped UMM’s regular season record to 12-11, and they are 7-5 in UMAC play. The Cougars next host Northland College on Saturday, February 16, at 5:00 p.m.
