Mayville, ND—The University of Minnesota-Morris baseball team was unable to overcome an early deficit en route to a 10-2 loss at Mayville state on Tuesday.

Starring offensively for the Cougars were Dan Folie (Jr. Fridley, MN), who scored a run, and Matt Throngard (So. Grantsburg, WI) who picked up an RBI.

The Cougars sent Nick Hervin (Sr. Cold Spring, MN) to the mound to start the game, and Hervin ran into trouble in the first inning, giving up two quick runs.

However, UMM struck back in their half of the second inning with two runs of their own to tie the score at 2-2.

Thomas Fox (Fr. Coon Rapids, MN) was brought in begin the third inning and gave up three runs, giving Mayville the lead right back at 5-2. The home team also touched Fox for one more run in the fourth inning.

Despite hits from Matt Peterson (So. Burnsville, MN), Kevin Pope (Sr. Ely, MN), Kirby Marquart (Sr. Hancock, MN) and Erik Jahn (Fr. Minneapolis, MN), the Cougars were unable to put any more runs on the scoreboard the rest of the game.

Fox was charged with the loss, while Kyle Blair (Fr. Calgary, Alberta) and Nate Haseman (Fr. Butterfield, MN) each pitched an inning in relief.

After 15 games, Folie currently leads the Cougars with a .490 batting average. Also hitting over .300 are Hervin (.395), Greg Roth (Sr., Cold Spring, MN) (.378), and Marquart (.353).

Marquart leads UMM with two home runs and Nick Bacon (Fr. Forestville, WI) is 3-3 in stolen base attempts.

Pitchers Fox (10.2 innings pitched) and Joe Boedigheimer (Jr. Moose Lake, MN) lead the team with earned run averages of 4.22 and 4.82, respectively, while starters Lee Arvold (Fr. Blaine, MN) and Andy Schuster (So. Alberta, MN) have each logged over 20 innings.

Minnesota-Morris (4-11, 1-2 UMAC) travels to Mankato for the three game UMAC series with Bethany Lutheran this Friday and Saturday, April 18th and 19th.

The Cougars and Vikings will play one nine inning contest on Friday and then a pair of seven inning games Saturday.
