Minneapolis, MN—The University of Minnesota-Morris baseball team lost both a sluggers match and a pitchers dual against St. Scholastica on Sunday.
The home team showed their muscle right away in the first inning, as Cougar starting pitcher Joe Boedigheimer (Jr. Moose Lake, MN) only lasted a third of an inning while St. Scholastica scored four times in the frame.
After St. Scholastica increased its lead to 6-0 after three innings, UMM tried to climb back into the game in the fourth inning when Nick Hervin (Sr. Cold Spring, MN) doubled and came home after singles from Dan Folie (Jr. Fridley, MN) and Kirby Marquart (Sr. Hancock, MN).
Following the single Cougar run, however, St. Scholastica added three runs in their half of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to take a commanding 11-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly from Marquart scored Hervin in the sixth inning, but the home squad again put one more on the board in the bottom of the inning for the 12-2 final.
Folie (3-3) had the best individual day at the plate for UMM, while Marquart contributed a hit and two RBI and Hervin scored twice. Collecting one hit apiece were Greg Roth (Sr. Cold Spring, MN), Sean Mooney-Leber (So. Minneapolis, MN), Nick Bacon (Fr.), and Scott Barta (So. Faribault, MN).
Boedigheimer dropped to 1-1 by taking the loss in his short outing, allowing four earned runs and issuing three base on balls. Lee Arvold (Fr. Blaine, MN) pitched two and two third innings and allowed two earned runs, while Thomas Fox (Fr. Coon Rapids, MN) navigated the final three frames and gave up six earned runs.
The second contest was a much tighter affair.
St. Scholastica scratched a run across in the bottom of the first inning against UMM starter Kyle Blair (Fr. Calgary, Alberta) but did not mount a serious threat again until the fourth.
Minnesota-Morris’ bats were not able to take advantage of the solid pitching performances, however, as they were held to just two hits during the contest.
St. Scholastica added a run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 2-0, and UMM squandering their best opportunity of the game by leaving the bases loaded in the fifth.
Despite pitching well—allowing just one earned run in three innings—Blair (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Andy Schuster (So. Alberta, MN) pitched two innings in relief and saw an unearned run score on his watch, while Nik Randall (So. Burnsville, MN) pitched a scoreless final frame.
Collecting the two Cougar hits were Marquart and Matt Peterson (So. Burnsville, MN).
The Cougars now have a 7-18 record and are 2-8 in the UMAC.
