Cougars end regular season on sour note
(Story by: Zach Koenig)

Northfield, MN—The University of Minnesota-Morris baseball team ended its season with a discomforting 25-5 loss against Carleton College on Tuesday. The second game was cancelled due to rain.

The Cougars actually jumped out to a brief lead in the first inning, when singles from Matt Peterson (So. Burnsville, MN), Kevin Pope (Sr. Ely, MN), and Greg Roth (Sr. Cold Spring, MN) led to two runs.

UMM starting pitcher Andy Schuster (So. Alberta, MN), however, only lasted one and two thirds innings, allowing nine hits and 12 earned runs while walking five batters. He was charged with the loss and dropped to 1-5 on the season.

Down 14-2 going into the fourth inning, the Cougars managed to pick up another run thanks to a Kirby Marquart (Sr. Hancock, MN) double followed by a Carleton balk and a passed ball.

Carleton then scored four more times in their half of the fourth inning off Cougar reliever Joe Boedigheimer (Jr. Moose Lake, MN), although none of the runs were earned due to an error by UMM left-fielder Roth. Boedigheimer ultimately lasted two and third innings, allowing four hits and just one earned run.

Minnesota-Morris scored their final runs of the contest in the sixth inning. Singles from Erik Jahn (Fr. Minneapolis, MN) and Josh Nyquist (Fr. Brooklyn Park, MN), combined with Dan Folie (Jr. Fridley, MN) being hit by a pitch and a walk taken by Nick Bacon (Fr.), allowed two runs to cross the plate.

Nate Haseman (Fr. Butterfield, MN) pitched the final two innings of the contest for UMM, giving up five earned runs on six hits.

Hervin (2-3) and Peterson (1-4, 1 RBI, 1 R) led the Cougar offense, while Pope, Roth, Marquart, Jahn, Nyquist, and Haseman all collected single hits as well.

With the drubbing, the Cougars ended their regular season at 10-23.
