Duluth, MN—After two strong offensive outbursts on Saturday, the University of Minnesota-Morris softball team’s bats fell silent on Sunday, losing 12-3 and 8-0 to Northland College.
The first contest began well for the Cougars, as a Liz Leuty (Fr. St. Cloud, MN) single to lead off the game was followed by a Diane Blommel (Fr. Long Prairie, MN) single and a Heather Briese (Fr. Fergus Falls, MN0 double to open up an early 2-0 lead.
However, Northland College managed to score one run in each of innings two through five to go up 4-2.
UMM cut the lead to one run in the sixth inning when Bailey Jelle (Jr. Lakeville, MN) singled, was sacrificed to second base by Blommel, and eventually scored on a Briese single.
Down just 4-3, UMM let the floodgates open in the bottom of the sixth, when Northland College collected eight runs on eight hits to put the final score at 12-3.
Emilie Kalvig (Jr. Blackduck, MN) took the loss, pitching four and two thirds innings and giving up 16 hits en route to nine earned runs.
Jelle (2-2, R) and Briese (2-3, 3 RBI) led the offense, with Blommel and Leuty also picking up one hit and run scored apiece.
In the second game, UMM ran into the spectacular pitching of Northland College’s Langfeldt, who only allowed one Cougar hit in five innings of work.
Northland College scored two runs in each of the first four innings, forcing the loss upon Cougar starter Ashley Corbett (Jr. Forest Lake, MN), who pitched an inning and a third and allowed two earned runs. Kalvig came on in relief to pitch the final two and two thirds innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs.
The lone UMM hit came from Briese in the second inning.
