Saint Mary’s University scored twice in the second half and held off a late run by the Cougars to pick up a 2-1 win in non-conference women’s soccer action Friday at the Cougar Soccer Field.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Cardinals wasted little time to score the games first goal.

Amy Sibik gave SMU a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the second half (59:44) with Melissa Paulson getting the assist.

Just over seven minutes later, Stephanie Marnocha, took a pass from Bethany Kaufmann to put Saint Mary’s on top 2-0.

Minnesota, Morris cut the lead in half at 2-1 on Michelle Hentges, (Fr. Andover, Minn.) first career goal as a Cougar at 87:02. Breanna Cross (Fr. Brooklyn Park, Minn.) earned the assist on the play.

The Cougars had two opportunities in the games final minutes to tie the score, but a shot by Nina Jarnot (Jr. Sartell, Minn.) hit the cross bar and a final shot by Leah Parker (Fr. Minnetonka, Minn.) was turned away by Cardinal goal keeper Maiana Sanchez and SMU hung on for the win.

Saint Mary’s out shot UMM 27-7, but good solid defense by Minnesota, Morris kept the game close.
