Mattson Towley (So. Alexandria, Minn) scored his first goal of the season and UMM earned their third straight shut out and fifth win overall with a convincing 3-0 win over St. John's University Tuesday night at Big Cat Stadium.

UMM scored what would prove to be the only goal they would need at the 24:14 mark of the first have when junior Dana Veth made a great play on defense just past the mid field line and stole the ball from a St. John's player, pushed the ball ahead to Brent Diggs (Jr. Champlin, Minn.) who hit Mattson Towley with a perfect pass.

Towley, seeing his first action of the season due to an injury, used his speed to jet past a Johnnie defender and come in to the left to the St. John's goal keeper and plant one in the back of the net to put UMM in front 1-0. For Towley, it was his first goal of the season.

The score stayed that way as the team s headed to the break.

The Cougars wasted little time extending their lead when Zach Gilseth (So. Champlin, Minn.) scored just under one minute the second half and made a beautiful shot to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Patrick O'Connor (Jr. ham Lake, Minn.) picked up the assist.

Brent Diggs tallied his fourth goal of the season at 58:49 with a great play taking the ball about 20 yards into Johnnie territory and played the ball on the second bounce to blast one into the net for a 3-0 Cougar advantage.

That would be all the scoring in the game.

SJU out shot Minnesota, Morris 13-11, but the Cougars had a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Tyler Simpson (So. Broomfield, Colo.) picked up his second save of the year.

For the Cougars, it was their third straight victory an upped their record to 5-1 overall. Of their five wins, four have come against teams from the MIAC conference. It was also their third straight shut out of the year.

The game was the first ever played at Big Cat Stadium and drew a nice crowd. It also marked the first ever night game in the history of Cougar soccer.

Minnesota, Morris begins Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action at home this weekend when they entertain Bethany Lutheran Friday at 2:00 at the Cougar Soccer Field and then Saturday, host Martin Luther College at 12:00.
