Morris, MN—Just two days after sweeping Presentation College in a road doubleheader, the University of Minnesota-Morris softball team turned the same trick again, this time defeating Presentation by scores of 9-1 and 7-0 here at UMM on Friday.
In the first contest, singles from Heather Briese (Fr. Fergus Falls, MN), Heidi Miller (Fr. Eden Valley, MN), and Bailey Jelle (Jr. Lakeville, MN), combined with a double from Liz Leuty (Fr. St. Cloud, MN) and a walk drawn by Briana Czer (Jr. New Ulm, MN), gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead after the second inning.
UMM added another run the next inning when Emily Holstrom (Fr. Albert Lea, MN) reached base on a fielder’s choice, stole second, and scored on a Miller single.
Stephanie Wilson (So. Detroit Lakes, MN) pitched a gem for the Cougars, allowing only four hits and one unearned run in six innings, striking out four and walking just one. The win put Wilson’s season tally at 2-3.
After Presentation’s lone unearned run in the 4th inning, Minnesota-Morris blew the game open in the sixth on hits from Miller, Czer, Leuty, and Jelle, giving the Cougars a 9-1 final margin of victory.
The offensive stars for the Cougars included Leuty (3-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Miller (3-3, 2 R). Jelle also picked up two hits and four RBI, while Wilson, Briese, and Czer each contributed one hit.
The Cougars got off to another quick start in the second game when Leuty led off the game with a bunt single, stole second base, advanced to third on an error by the visiting shortstop, and scored on Jelle’s single to left field.
Four more runs would come in the 3rd and 4th innings for the Cougars. In the 3rd, Jelle tripled down the right field line and scored on a Diane Blommel (Fr. Long Prairie, MN) single. Blommel would later score on a Briese single.
In the 4th, Leuty walked and eventually came around to score on a series of Presentation miscues, then Blommel gave the Cougars a 5-0 lead with an RBI double.
Like Wilson who preceded her, UMM starting pitcher Emilie Kalvig (Jr. Blackduck, MN) turned in a strong performance, hurling seven scoreless innings and only allowing four hits. Kalvig did not walk a batter and struck out four en route to improving her record to 2-3.
Minnesota-Morris added two final runs in the 6th inning thanks to a bases loaded walk drawn by Jelle and a single from Blommel.
Blommel (3-3, 3 RBI) had a perfect day at the plate, while Leuty and Jelle also picked up two hits and two runs scored apiece. Briese, Julie Rohling (So. Howard Lake, MN), Cortney Nikolaus (So. Anoka, MN), and Czer each had one hit.
With the two victories, UMM improved to 5-6 overall on the season, 3-2 in UMAC play.
