Rosemount, MN—In the second game of Sunday’s UMAC crossover action, the University of Minnesota-Morris softball team scored a few more runs than the previous no-hit effort, but could not equal the firepower of Northland College, losing 17-4.
Northland College jumped all over UMM pitchers early, scoring 11 runs on five hits and seven walks in the opening frame.
Cougar starter Ashley Corbett (Jr. Forest Lake, MN) lasted just one third of an inning, allowing six earned runs on two hits and six base on balls.
UMM did manage to get on the scoreboard in the second inning when Heather Briese (Fr. Fergus Falls, MN) doubled, Corbett singled, and Heidi Miller (Fr. Eden Valley, MN) grounded out to the pitcher and picked up an RBI.
The Cougars also scored a run in the third inning when a Bailey Jelle (Jr. Lakeville, MN) double was followed by singles from Diane Blommel (Fr. Long Prairie, MN) and Briese.
However, Northland College kept piling on, scoring runs in all three of the final frames for a total of 17.
Minnesota-Morris relief pitcher Blommel went four and two thirds innings, allowing 11 earned runs on 11 hits while issuing eight free passes.
The Cougars finished their scoring in the fifth inning thanks to hits from Briana Czer (Jr. New Ulm, MN), Leuty, and Briese.
Briese led the offense with a perfect 3-3 performance, including 2 RBIs and one run scored. Leuty, Jelle, Blommel, Corbett, and Czer added single hits.
