After falling behind two sets to zero, the University of Minnesota, Morris volleyball team stagged a furious comeback that came up just short in a tough 3-2 loss to Northland College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC)volleyball action on October 3rd.
The Lumberjills looked as if they would sweep the Cougars in three after a 25-19 victory in the first set and a tough 26-24 win in the second to take a 2-0 advantage.
But UMM came out strong in the third set and built a quick 11-8 lead on a tip from Sam Pfannenstein (So. St. Cloud, Minn).
The Cougars closed out the set on a 14-7 run to pick up the 25-15 win.
Once again in the fourth set, the Cougars started fast and strong taking a 10-5 lead on seven straight serving points by Colleen Hermes (So. Vadnais Heights, Minn.)to give Minnesota, Morris a 10-5 lead.
Northland came back and took a 14-13 and the two teams battled back and forth over the next several points.
With the fourth game dead locked at 25-25, Senior Brina Czer (New Ulm, Minn.) and Casey Stott came up with a kill each to give the Cougars a thrilling 27-25 win and force a fifth and deciding set.
in the fifth, Allison Pippo's (So. Annandale, Minn) kill put the Cougars up by two at 8-6.
Neither team seemd to be able to take control of the fifth set as each team had a chance to win the match late, but just could not put two straight points together, until the Jills, with the score even at 14, rattled off the lst two points of the set to take a 16-14 win and win the match 3-2.
Alison Pippo had a season high 18 kills, Briana Czer added 15.
Sam Pfannenstein had a season best 43 assists.
Five Cougars reached double digits in digs, led by Briana Czers match and a season best 18. It was the third double-double of the year for Czer.
