The University of Minnesota, Morris woman's basketball team snapped a four game losing streak to start the season as the Cougar defeated Mayville State 70-63 Saturday in Mayville.
The Cougars jumped out to a 32-27 lead at the break connecting on 50 percent (13-26) in the first 20 minutes.
The Comets kept the game close but UMM shot 52 percent (13-25) in the second half and 26 of 51 (50%) for the game to pick up their first win of the 2008-09 season.
The Cougar had three in double figures led by a 20 point effort from Coressa Leighty (Sr. New Ulm, Minn.).
Nikki Washek (Jr. Underwood, Minn.) had 16 and three assists.
Jamie Rainey (Sr. Maple Grove, Minn.) dished out nine assists in the game.
Senior Tynell Kocer (Pierre, S.D.) had 13 for the second straight game.
However this 13 point effort gave her exactly 1,000 points in her Cougar career.
Kocer becomes the 18th player in UMM woman's basketball history to reach the 1,000 point mark. Alaina Benson did it last year and Malinda Berglund two years before that in the 2005-06 season.
Tynell leads he team in scoring through five games with 84 points and averaging 16.8 ppg.
At that pace, she will have a chance to finish in the top five in all-time scoring in Cougar woman's basketball history.
Cindy Lonneman is the all-time scoring leader for woman's basketball at Minnesota, Morris with 1,949 points from 1079-83.
Minnesota, Morris will not get much time to savor the win as they travel to Valley City to take on Valley City State Monday at 7:00.
