The University of Minnesota, Morris woman's basketball team won their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener Friday with a convincing 82-64 win at Bethany Lutheran.

Junior Nikki Washek (Underwood, Minn.) had a career night for the Cougar women in leading them to their second win of the season.

UMM took an early one point lead at 7-4 just over two minutes into the contest on a lay-up from Senior Coresa Leighty (New Ulm, Minn.).

Over the next 4 1/2 minutes, the Cougars used a 10-0 run to grab a 16-6 lead with 13:38 to go before halftime.

The Vikings cut the deficit to four a couple of times but the Cougars took a 43-33 lead at the break.

Washek was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the first half, including 5-of-5 from three point land for 17 first half points.

The Cougars pushed the lead to as many as 21 in the second half as they cruised to their second win in the last three games. Both wins have come on the road.

This was the fourth straight road game for coach Tim Grove's squad.

Washek finished the evening with a career high 30 points on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor overall and 7 for 9 beyond the three-point line. She also had 4 rebounds

Coresa Leighty added 19 points and five rebounds, Steph Roggenbuck (So. Osakis, Minn.) had 10 points.

Jaimie Rainey (Sr. Maple Grove, Minn.) had a career high 11 assists for the Cougars.

Minnesota, Morris was 20-of-61 from the floor in the game (46%).

One key stat in the game is the Cougars shot 50 percent from three=point range (9-18) while the Vikings were 0-for-8.

Minnesota, Morris (2-5, 1-0 UMAC) is at MLC Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
