Mathiowetz, Belting runner up at UMAC post-sesaon tournament

St. Paul, MN – Entering the number two women’s doubled flight of the 2006 upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) post season tournament as the number four seed, Rachel Mathiowetz (Sr. Sleepy Eye, MN) and Jeri Belting (Jr. Blaine, MN) of the University of Minnesota-Morris won two matches to take second place.

In their quarter final round match, Mathiowetz and Belting picked up an 8-4 win over Heather Goossen and Meaghan Wegmann of Bethany Lutheran to move into the semi final round. Earlier this season, they had defeated the BLC pair 9-8 winning a tie breaker by a score of 7-4.

In the semi finals, Mathiowetz and Belting took on Heidi Johnson and Liz Shaner of St. Scholastica and earned an 8-3 win.

In the title match against Kayla Ross and Tiffany Eberly of Northwestern College, Ross and Eberly defeated Mathiowetz and Belting 8-2.

Mastin won his quarter final round match with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win over Luis Berrospid of Bethany Lutheran.

In the semi finals, Tyler upset the number one seed Ian Wenzel of St. Scholastica with a great three set effort.

Wenzel won the first set 6-1, but Mastin took the second set 6-3 to set up the tie breaking match.

A convincing 10-1 win in the third set put Mastin into the title match against number two seed Dan Laitinen of Martin Luther.

Laitinen, who won the two previous matches during the regular season the two played, was a 6-0 6-0 winner in the championship match to win the title.

Mastin finishes the year with a 4-8 record in singles play.

In doubles action, Sean Gremmels (Jr. Glenwood, MN) and Mastin entered the tournament as the number four seed in the number one doubles flight.

They won their opening match defeating Sheehan and Berrospid of BLC 8-4 and then upended the number one seeded duo of Eric VanderStelt and Ian Wenzel of St. Scholastica by the same score of 8-4 to advance to the championship match.

In the title match, they met the Martin Luther team of Brad Nehls and Dan Laitinen for the third time this season.

On April 21, in New Ulm, Gremmels and Mastin won 8-4, but the following day in Morris, Nehls and Laitinen picked up an 8-6 win.

In a hard fought, very even match, Nehls and Laitinen prevailed 9-7 to win the title at number one doubles.
