The University of Minnesota-Morris women’s tennis team opened up Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action last week with a 6-3 loss at Martin Luther College and then rebounded with a thrilling 5-4 win over Bethany Lutheran.
Last Thursday, the Cougars traveled to new Ulm for their first conference match of the season.
Martin Luther took five of the six singles matches, while UMM won two of the three matches in doubles play.
Emily Whebbe (Sr. Mendota heights, MN) was the lone winner in singles action for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Julianne Kionka of Martin Luther in the number six single match.
In double competition, Jeri Belting (Jr., Blaine, MN) and Beth Griepentrog (Jr. Milwaukee, WI) won the number two match by a score of 8-5, while the number three doubles tandem of Tara Raske (Sr. Glencoe, MN) and Emily Whebbe were 9-7 winners.
Sunday, Minnesota-Morris won three singles matches and two in doubles play in a 5-4 win over Bethany Lutheran in Morris.
Jeri Belting was a 6-4, 6-0 winner in the number three singles match.
Beth Griepentrog won at number four singles 7-6, 6-1 and Emily Whebbe was a straight set 6-0 6-0 winner at number six.
Belting and Griepentrog won at number doubles 8-0 and Raske and Nikki Thompson (So. Brooklyn Park, MN) teamed up for an 8-6 win in number three doubles.
The Cougars (1-2, 1-1 UMAC) return to action tomorrow, Tuesday April 11 at 3:00 when they host Northwestern College.
