Coming off a 1-4 stretch over the past week, the Cougar volleyball team gathered its resolve and battled for a 3-0 sweep of Mount Marty College at the PE Center Friday night. It was the first of two match victories for UMM that night.
Momentum in the first game wavered back and forth as neither team managed to establish a serving run for more than two points until the 14-point mark when Jordan Olerud served the first of her three aces in the game. It sparked a three point swing the Cougars never relinquished. Allie Humphrey served out the match at 25-22.
In game two, the Cougars opened an early lead behind sharp serving from libero Lindsay Jacobson. The serve return and defense thwarted all Mount Marty attempts to stage a comeback: after picking up their sixth point, the Lancers failed to win another service point for the game. Game two ended 25-17.
The Cougars built a large early lead in game three when Allie Humphrey served five straight points on the way to opening a seven point lead. The Lancers rallied late to close the gap to three, but it was too late: Cougars prevailed 25-21.
The theme of the night offensively was balance as five Cougars recorded a team-high six kills: Stephanie Schmiesing, Olerud, Megan Theis, Allie Humphrey, and Justine Banken. Natalie Thomas, Olerud and Allie Humphrey each had three service aces.
Defensively the Cougars were paced by backliners Jacobson (14 digs) and captain Colleen Hermes (11 digs). At the net, Theis contributed 4 block assists for a team total 4.5 blocks for the match.
