Women's Soccer--Week in Review (Afton Treanor, University Register)
9/17/2009
This week the Cougar ladies’ soccer team went 1-1. Their first stop was at Hamline University in St. Paul on Sunday for some non-conference action. Amber O’Connor (Jr., Ham Lake, Minn.) was the offensive leader, with three shots, two of which were shots on goal. Maddy Gerber (So., Mahtomedi, Minn.), Nina Jarnot (Sr., Sartell, Minn.), and Bre Cross (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) also got a piece of the ball with one shot each, but none of them were able to get it into the net. The Cougars were still hugely outshot by the Pipers, who took 18 shots, compared to Morris’ six. And despite Emily Jacob’s (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) nine saves as the goalkeeper, Hamline scored three goals to Morris’ zero. The final and most painful goal was in the last three minutes of the game.
On Tuesday, Morris came back from their loss with a huge success at Presentation College. Every Cougar got a chance to take the field, and six of them scored goals. The final score was 11-3. Morris had double the number of players as Presentation, who had 11, just enough to play, but not enough to sub out.
O’Connor was a star on offense again, earning three goals against the Saints, as well as assisting Jarnot with the first of her two goals. That was Jarnot’s first goal of the season. Leah Parker (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) also scored her first goal of 2009. Liz Vold (Jr., Sartell, Minn.), an outstanding defender for the Cougars, also added to Morris’ rising score with the first goal of her college career.
The veterans clearly had a successful game, but the freshmen also made their mark at Presentation. Molly Olson (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) brought one home for the Cougars, and Katie Kestner (Fr., Phoenix, AZ) and Heidi Ivers (Fr., Zimmerman, Minn.) each assisted on other goals. It appears that the soccer team won’t have any trouble keeping its freshmen around for future seasons. Ivers said, “I think we have been getting along really well! I’m a freshman, and the team was very welcoming and helped me out a lot with this new experience.” Plus, she explained the goals for the season like this: “The main focus is to definitely play our best and get the most out of each practice, but besides all the hard work, we have a lot of fun!”
Next up for the Cougars is a packed weekend, with a game on Friday at Bethany Lutheran, followed by a face-off at Martin Luther on Saturday.
