Dan Magner
Head Soccer Coach

Dan Magner enters his third season as the Head Coach of the women’s soccer program here at UMM. He has helped the team continue their successful run of athletic and academic excellence over the past two seasons. A third UMAC Tournament Championship in 2006 and a Coach of the Year nod in 2007 show the program to be in good hands.

The team has earned an impressive array of honors during his two year stint, including a 31-7-2  overall record and a 24-4 mark in the UMAC. This past seasons run to the UMAC championship game, only to come out on the short end of penalty kicks to 2nd round NCAA Tournament participant St. Scholastica, keeps alive a streak of 4 straight visits to the penultimate UMAC contest.

His team has achieved well in the classroom earning the National  Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) Team Academic Award each season. Six of his students have earned NSCAA Regional Academic All-America status as well as American Achievement Academy and Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society recognition. The team boasts the top GPA in the UMAC and near the top for all women’s soccer programs in the nation, no small feat for students at a University ranked in the top 5 public liberal arts schools in the nation.

Prior to his time here at UMM Magner spent 5 seasons at St. Bonaventure University (NY), an NCAA Division 1 and Atlantic-10 conference member. During his tenure the team earned the second highest single season win total in program history, second highest single season win total in the A-10,  as well as historic wins over several nationally ranked opponents. His players earned academic honors including “Ideal St. Bonaventure Student”, NSCAA Academic All-Region and A-10 Academic All-Conference. In each of his 5 seasons the team earned the NSCAA College Team Academic Award.

As an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst he helped the team to back to back A-10 tournament appearances. He also served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University where the team advanced to the NCAA Division 1 “Sweet 16”. Head Coaching stints at the University of Kansas, Lafayette College and Wheaton College (MA) round out his collegiate experience.

Magner has been involved in the National Olympic Development program and is an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He has recently completed an international coaching course in Portugal.
In addition to his coaching duties here at UMM he teaches a Sport Management class as well as a First Aid/CPR/AED course. He serves the campus community thru the Scholastic Committee as well as the Academic Alert group.

A native of Hingham, MA Magner earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Eastern Nazerene College in Quincy MA where he was also the captain of the men’s soccer team. He currently resides in Glenwood, MN.

Scott Turnbull
Assistant Coach

 

Coach Turnbull will serve as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer team mainly working with the goalkeeper, coaching the men’s JV team and coordinating recruiting efforts for both team. 

Coach Turnbull is no stranger to UMM and Cougar Soccer.  He is a graduate of UMM (1999), a former kicker for the football team and he served as the first assistant coach for Coach DeVries in 1998 and 1999.  During his time with Cougar Soccer he helped develop former goal keeper, Katie Riba, into an Academic All American. He also helped recruit the first full class of Cougar soccer players that eventually went on to win the UMAC Championship.
