Health

Food and waterborne diseases are one of the major causes of illness to travelers.

It is difficult to guarantee the safety of a country's food products. Food quality is a particular concern in countries without strict public health standards, where bacteria or parasites may go undetected.

EAT

  • Well-cooked meats, vegetables and other foods, served hot
  • Freshly boiled foods such as beans, soups, rice and pasta
  • Breads, tortillas and other baked goods
  • Fruits, nuts and vegetables with thick skins or shells which you have removed yourself
  • Canned foods

DON'T EAT

  • Leafy or uncooked vegetables and salads
  • Undercooked or cold meat or fish
  • Large carnivorous fish, especially from reef areas
  • Unpasteurized cheese, yogurt or other dairy products or drink unpasteurized milk
  • Food enhancers such as chutneys or salsas, which are usually raw and made by hand
  • Buffet foods unless you know they are fresh and have been kept hot
  • Food from street vendors or from restaurants that appear unclean

Bring a supply of water purification tablets

If you have doubts about the water, don't use ice in your drinks

If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair

Carry medications in your carry-on luggage

  • Keep medications in their original, labeled containers (Americans have been arrested for possessing prescription drugs, if not in their original containers).
  • Bring a copy of the prescriptions

If you have a preexisting medical problem, carry a letter from your doctor describing the condition and any medications for it (include the generic name of the drug)

Observe the same health precautions as traveling in the United States

  • Wash hands often with soap and water
  • Carry a hand sanitizer
  • Walk and drive defensively (avoid travel at night, if possible)

Be aware of HIV

If you have questions about immunizations contact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
