King Ludwig's
Castle
We will fly from Minneapolis to Munich, and take excursions to King Ludwig's castles. By train, we will continue to Vienna to see Lohengrin and explore the history of the Habsburg Empire. On the way from Vienna to Merano, we will cross the Alps at the Brenner Pass into Italy.
We will spend a week in Munich, a week in Vienna, and two weeks in Dorf Tirol in Italy.

Mus 3993 Richard Wagner's Musikdrama, 2 cr.
In this course, students will study the libretti for selected Wagner operas and listen to the modern musicals, Elisabeth (1992) and Ludwig II. (2000) to learn about the history of Austria and Bavaria. The readings will consist of biographies, history, texts for the musicals and bi-lingual libretti from the operas, as well as some musicological articles and materials by and about Richard Wagner. We will also view films in German and English related to the course content.
Dr. Edith Borchardt, Professor of German at the University of Minnesota, Morris, received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and has been a member of the UMM faculty since 1985. She was born in Vienna, where she has spent many summers researching topics related to Austrian Studies. At UMM, she has taught a range of courses from the Middle Ages to Post-War German Literature, and her specialty is German Romanticism. Her methods of literary interpretation are interdisciplinary, including historical, philosophical, and psychological approaches. She led the Brunnenburg/Austria May Session in 2000 and 2006, and the Brunnenburg/Hungary May Session in 2002.
Dr. Martin Seggelke, Assistant Professor of Music at UMM, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music and Masters degrees from Universities in the United States, Germany and Canada. He is an active guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator throughout North America and Europe. Before coming to Morris, he taught at the Eastman School of Music, State University of New York at Fredonia and the University of Bremen, Germany, and he conducted various collegiate, professional and amateur ensembles. Dr. Seggelke was born in Hamburg, Germany, where he spent the first 30 years of his life before emigrating to the United States.

Includes: Eurail passes for three counties, lodging, breakfast and lunch during the Italy portion of the trip, program related excursions, insurance, tuition, and administrative fees.
