The Computer in Education

Class Nbr: 89172
Four (4) Semester Credits
Dates of Class Meetings: June 9-11 and 16-17, 2005, with additional online instruction conducted in an online learning community through July 8, 2005.
Times & Location: 8:30 - 3:30 pm, UMM Science 2530
This course introduces computer use in instructional settings using PC and Mac platforms. It includes basic skills development in software commonly used by educators. Teaching strategies using computer-assisted instruction are also covered.

Teaching with Technology

This course develops computer and educational technology skills focusing on using microcomputers for communication. Prereq: Educ 5412, or consent of instructor.

This course is the third in the sequence of the Educational Computing & Technology Certification. Specific course topics will focus on developing basic computer and educational technology skills for the administrative tasks of teaching. Course topics include:

Educ (Education) 5415
Advanced Educational Media Production
(4.0 cr; prereq 5412, 5413, 5414 or instructor consent)
Focus: Design and development of an individual or a group advanced media product.
7/10/06-8/4/06: 7/10/06-7/11/06, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., HFA 26 UMM; remainder of class, online.

Course Description: This course is the final course in the Educational Computing & Technology Certificate. The course addresses some of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and NCATE standards and provides high-quality computer technology education for students pursuing educational excellence. Pre-requisites for this course are Educ 5412 and Educ 5413 (or consent of the instructor).

Key topics include:

  • troubleshooting techniques for multimedia computer systems and related peripheral devices and multimedia software
  • uses of multimedia products as educational resources
  • equity, ethics, legal, and human issues concerning use of multimedia, computers and technology
  • design and creation of advanced media products utilizing a variety of applications and peripherals
  • integration of digital images and video into presentations
  • web site evaluation, design, and publishing.
