The University of Minnesota Morris and District 206 Community Education will partner to offer lifelong learning courses in the Alexandria area in April 2008.

Church Architecture and History:
A Study and Tour of God's Houses

Instructor: Laird Barber
UMM professor emeritus of English

This three-part course will explore, first, church history with discussion of local, state and national churches, and overseas roots in England and Europe and the Church Catholic. Our second session will focus on church architecture with a discussion and slideshow of churches, cathedrals, basilicas and the gothic style in America and Europe. Our third session will be a field trip to visit some beautiful and historic churches in Sauk Centre, Albany and Meire Grove. On April 28, we will stop at the Palmer House for coffee (on your own). Bring a friend and join us for this engaging topic offered through District 206 Community Education and the University of Minnesota, Morris.

Course Dates (3-part topic):
Mondays, April 14 and 21 (3 to 5 p.m.)
and tour April 28, 2008 (12:30 to 6:00 p.m.)

This course is sponsored in part with a grant from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute awarded to the University of Minnesota, Morris Continuing Education Regional Programs and Summer Session to develop a pilot program for UMM Lifelong Learning: Liberal Arts Courses for seniors in west central Minnesota.


Join UMM Lifelong Learning in 2007 for a series of liberal arts courses for seniors taught by current and retired faculty and other regional experts. Topics will be offered at convenient locations throughout West Central Minnesota in cooperation with local community education programs.

UMM Lifelong Learning offers non-credit courses for retired adults without grades, tests or assignments. Through a combination of academic enrichment, community activities, and local travel, UMM Lifelong Learning will provide participants with an opportunity for intellectual activity and fellowship with seniors who have similar interests.
