ArtS 1003 Visual Studies for Non Majors: Beginning Painting (96746)

Course Description
The development of painting as a means of artistic expression, including basic technical, material, and formal compositional problems. For non-majors with little or no previous experience in Painting.

Course Information
Introductory class to the fundamentals in materials and techniques, including varied supports, grounds, and media used in painting. Emphasis is on developing skills and understanding of form, color, and composition. The methodology will include lectures, discussions and demonstrations followed by student exercises that focus on the principles and techniques of graphic and painterly presentation. Inherent in this process is the student's development of visual sensitivity to his/her environment and the accomplishment of skills in the handling of painting media in the representation of forms, objects and images on a two dimensional surface. Each section of the class is designed in a progressive manner building your visual and interpretive skills. Students will be introduced to and expand upon techniques and vocabulary associated with painting and 2-D presentations.

Goals
The goals in this class are designed to strengthen skills in the means to describe form, space and light relationships through paint. Exploring and understanding the visual properties and color relationships. The principles of visual organization. The physical properties of paint. Creative problem solving.

Requirements
Through a series of Paintings and exercises, students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the principles and concepts presented. Students are expected to work during the entire class period and outside of class on assignments.

Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes. After three unexcused absences, the final grade may be lowered by one grade. Three tardies count as one absence. Leaving class early without the consent of the instructor will also count as one absence. The student must stress communication with the instructor, if issues like these affect your performance in this class.

Class critiques are very important. Students are expected to present work punctually and participate in every critique. Participation means taking part in verbal discussions along with administering constructive criticism in regards to paintings that are being critiqued. Attendance for critique is mandatory.

Course Dates
May 19-June 6, 2008; Monday-Thursday, 9:00-12:00 noon; HFA 130
Painting studio will be available for students to work Monday-Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. This course requires a significant amount of outside-of-class work to keep up with assignments .

Textbooks/Materials
Acrylic Paints (basic colors, variety of brushes, pre-stretched canvases and gessoed panels). These items will be made available through the UMM Bookstore. No textbook will be required.

Faculty Profile
Michael Eble was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received a BFA degree in painting from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a MFA degree in painting and drawing from the University of Mississippi, in Oxford, Mississippi. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Studio Art and HFA Gallery Curator at the University of Minnesota at Morris. Before relocating to Minnesota, Michael spent a year as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Mississippi and also an Instructor of Art at the Memphis College of Art in Memphis, Tennessee. Over the past years he has shown his paintings, drawings, and prints in numerous regional and national exhibitions. Eble has been the recipient of grants through the Mcknight Foundation, Lake Region Arts Council , Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, Vermont Studio Center, University of Minnesota, and has received travel and research awards,  from the University of Mississippi and the University of Minnesota, Morris.
