May Session 2009 Courses

What is the May Session?
The May Session is a special three-week session that begins immediately after Spring Semester ends at UMM. The May Session is designed to provide exciting opportunities for faculty and students to participate in unique courses and other learning experiences offered in a short, concentrated time frame.

The May Session will enrich and expand upon the University’s regular semester curricular offerings and enhance learning opportunities for students in innovative ways. Programs ranging from survey sampling and the story of sports to travel programs in England, China, Germany and the Czech Republic are scheduled for UMM’s May Session.

May Session courses are open to students from other colleges as well as community members (some courses have prerequisites).

Dates
May Session 2009 will be held Monday, May 18–Friday, June 5. Some May Session programs (particularly study abroad) have special dates. Please refer to individual listings to see specific dates for each program.

Registration
Registration in the May Session is part of the summer term. You can begin registering for the May Session on March 25. Some courses will fill quickly, so register early.

Note, however, that off-campus May Session programs (those which involve the purchase of an airplane ticket) require that you sign up and pay a deposit by no later than February 15. If needed, determinations will be made at this time about minimum enrollment numbers in these programs.

You may register for May Session courses in one of three ways:

  • on the Web at: http://www.morris.umn.edu/onestop/
(May Session courses are included in summer class schedule)
  • at the Registrar’s Office, 212 Behmler Hall
  • at the Continuing Education Office, 225 Community Services Building

All May Session courses are subject to minimum enrollment requirements. Courses with low enrollments may be cancelled.

Reduced Travel Program Fee and Scholarships
Sign up by the early deadline to receive a $150 program fee reduction. For study abroad programs, you will also be included in a drawing for an additional $500 fee reduction. Regardless of when you turn in your application, you may be eligible to apply for UMM scholarships worth up to $750. For program and scholarship applications for study abroad programs, contact the Center for International Programs.

Course Load
Because the May Session is designed to immerse students in a single subject during the three-week program, students may take just ONE course during the May Session. On-campus classes will typically meet an entire morning or afternoon with non-class time devoted to reading, studying and other class projects.

Financial Aid
If you need financial aid for the May Session, you should begin exploring your financial aid options now. You will need to complete a summer financial aid application to receive official aid for the May Session. Applications are typically available by March 1. However, you are welcome and encouraged to consult with a financial aid staff member about your May Session financial aid eligibility at your earliest convenience. Contact the UMM Financial Aid Office, 105 Behmler Hall, 589.6035.

Tuition
Tuition for May Session courses will be the same as it is during the regular academic year; $316.54 per credit in 2008-09. Student services fees will not be charged during the May Session. Please read individual program descriptions for information on additional materials or travel costs for that course. (Tuition and fees are subject to change.)

Grading/Cancellations/Refunds
May Session grading, refund and cancellation policies are listed on the UMM website at:
http://www.morris.umn.edu/services/registrar/register.html

Advising
Be sure to consult your adviser if you plan to participate in the May Session. You’ll want to be sure you understand how a specific course fits in your degree plan, major requirements and credit load. Plan ahead by talking to your adviser now.

Housing
Please contact the Office of Residential Life for information about on-campus housing during the May Session.

Travel Programs
A number of May Session courses involve travel in the U.S. or overseas. Preparations for these programs (such as plane reservations, passports, visas) must be completed well in advance of the course departure dates. In addition to registering for these courses, you will be required to pay a deposit by February 1 and attend orientation sessions during spring semester.
