American Jazz Styles (96750)

Course Description
Development and analysis of the New Orleans dixieland, ragtime, stride, boogie-woogie, Chicago dixieland, swing, bop, cool, funky, progressive, third-stream, free form, and fusion jazz styles. Introductory course to help non-music majors become familiar with and appreciate this art form.

Course Information
The course will concentrate on helping students learn the sounds of American Jazz Styles and become articulate about the characteristics and musicians. There will be nine listening quizzes and three written tests. There will be no outside reading assignments (the textbook will be the only outside reading). The students will be expected to spend time outside of class listening to jazz. There will be no writing assignments.
