Join us for an action packed excursion into the world of jazz improvisation.  Be a part of the second annual summer jazz camp for high school musicians at the University of Minnesota, Morris! Whether you already enjoy playing jazz solos or you are ready to start to learn how to improvise, this session is definitely for you.  We will be starting at square one doing call and response, learning about chord construction, developing an understanding of jazz theory, working on transcriptions of famous solos, internalizing licks, and learning about the characteristics of American Jazz Styles.  Be ready to dive into a wealth of experiences designed to help you become a better player in the world of jazz.

Working with you throughout the four-day camp will be international jazz legends, Byron Stripling (brass) and Kenni Holmen (winds). Both are accomplished educators, performers and musicians with a long and passionate commitment to working with students demonstrated through their many jazz clinics conducted around the world over the past thirty years.

Directing the program is Dr. Jim (“Doc”) Carlson, professor of music at UMM and founder of the renowned “Jazz Fest,” now celebrating its 31st anniversary of jazz performance and instruction on the UMM campus.

Assisting “Doc” is Joel Vanderheyden, UMM alum, who is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Music at the University of Iowa. While completing his masters degree, Joel studied with Chris Vadala at the University of Maryland. He was deeply involved in music and the jazz program as an undergrad at UMM. In 2006-07, Joel served as a visiting professor of music at UMM.

Six UMM students, all talented musicians and deeply involved in UMM's jazz program, will mentor participants and assist with instruction throughout the program.

The clinic is open to high school musicians in grades 8-12 (currently) with a range of music and jazz backgrounds: from beginners to experienced, there will be sessions designed for your needs and interests.
