James Carlson, Professor of Music at the University of Minnesota Morris, has been an active and influential force in music education in Minnesota for many years. His jazz ensembles have been showcased at many prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall with the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals. Professor Carlson has produced and conducted the annual UMM Jazz Festival since 1979. He has been an active clinician in the upper Midwest and has conducted several Minnesota All-State Jazz Ensembles.

Carlson holds a Bachelor of Arts with distinction from the University of Minnesota Morris, a Master of Music with high distinction from Moorhead State University, and a Doctor of Music Education with high distinction from Indiana University.

Dr. Jim "Doc" Carlson

His professional distinctions include the following: U of M Alumni Teaching Award, Minnesota Legislature Exceptional Teaching Skills Award, NBA Jazz Award, U of M Distinguished Research Award, IAJE Educator of the Year, Minnesota Academic Excellence Foundation Distinguished Leader in Education Award, U of M Academy of Distinguished Teachers designate, MMEA Educator of the Year, and the MMEA Hall of Fame Award.

He has served as president of both the Minnesota International Association of Jazz Educators and the Minnesota Music Educators Association. In 2006, he was inducted to the Minnesota Music Educators Hall of Fame. In addition to receiving grants for over thirty music education projects, he has contributed numerous articles on music education to such publications a Gopher Music Notes, The International Trumpet Guild Journal, IAJE Educator, and The Instrumentalist.
