What is your jazz involvement at UMM: Drummer for Jazz Ensemble 1, Head Member at Large in UMM Jazz Council
Who are your favorite jazz musicians and why:
1. John Coltrane: Coltrane's technical ability in combination with his emotional playing and spirituality makes him my all time favorite musician across the board. His intensity blows my mind every time I listen to his records. He has such command and discipline over his music and that shear prowess makes him an unstoppable force.
2. Miles Davis: He is the face of jazz music. He created so many different sounds, worked with the best players, and kept trying new things even up until his later days. He put out so many albums and each one was a breath of fresh air. His music is and always will be hip.
3. Thelonious Monk: I love his note choices and the percussive effect he gets out of the piano. His compositions are way hip and I love his use of dissonance and rhythmic displacement.
4. Ornette Coleman: He reinvented jazz. Although he is not very popular among most jazz musicians, I think the fact that he had the guts to disregard conventional jazz music to create a new hybrid form says a lot about his determination and willingness to look beyond what has already been done.
5. Charles Mingus: His compositions are way hip and his bands swing harder than any other group I've listened to. Mingus' music has sooooo much soul.
What do you want tell participants about the experience they'll have at UMM in June, with Doc, Vadala/VIzzutti, you, etc...This experience is going to be awesome! The clinicians are fantastic guys and amazing players. Doc is super helpful and a great director. Joel is hands down the coolest guy you'll ever meet and a wicked saxophone player. My student peers are equally as excited as I am for this. We all love to teach and we hope to answer your questions and offer more insight to the world of jazz.
