Student Organization Budget Review and
2007-2008 Student Activity Fee Allocation Recommendations

The documents linked below include background information on student service fees, the Activity Fee Review Committee, the student organization funding structure for the Morris campus, and finally a summary of Committee action and recommendations regarding allocation of the 2007-2008 Student Activities Fee and concerns shared on behalf of the Committee membership during its annual allocation hearings conducted February 16-17, 2007.

Committee Recommendations to the Chancellor

  1. ALLOCATION TO STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, PROGRAMS, & DEPARTMENTS
The Activity Fee Review Committee recommends allocation of 2007-2008 Student Activities Fee funds to student organizations, programs, and departments in the amounts listed herewith. As the Committee is charged with recommending an allocation and not to manage actual expenditures, any deviation in allocation from the submitted budget request is explained for each recommendation as an informal and nonbinding suggestion.

  2. ALLOCATION TO GUEST SPEAKERS POOL ($15,000.00)
This recommendation allows for funds to be distributed among any annually funded organizations, or cooperatives thereof, which have not been allocated funds for speaking events. The allocation process would be the responsibility of a working group charged by the Chancellor specifically for this purpose.

    ASSIGNMENT OF WORKING GROUP
This recommendation calls for a working group to be assigned to allocate the $15,000.00 back to annually funded organizations for purposes of bringing guest speakers to campus in 2007-2008 in a way that is sensitive to the needs of the whole campus while addressing on a larger scale the concerns regarding quantity and scheduling of speaking events on campus. Similar funding and review of department, discipline, and administration initiated speakers is also encouraged by the Committee. This group might consist of student fees committee representatives, student organization representatives, student affairs personnel, faculty and staff delegates, division chairs, and dean.

  3. IDENTIFICATION OF ALTERNATIVE FUNDING SOURCE FOR SATELLITE SERVICE SUBSCRIPTION
It is the opinion of the Activity Fee Review Committee that a source of continued funding for satellite service should have been determined prior to the equipment request from the Technology Fee. After three years of one-time funding, the Committee believes it would be in the best interest of affected student organizations and the Chancellor to encourage the department responsible for oversight of the equipment and facilities to seek institutional funding for satellite service beginning with the 2008-2009 academic year.

  4. REQUIREMENT OF CREDIT STATEMENT FOR FUNDED ACTIVITIES
Any event, poster, or publication paid for in full or in part by the Student Activity Fee must include a statement and/or announcement to the effect of This activity made possible with funds from the UMM Student Activity Fee. Assistance with implementing this requirement will be provided by the Office of Student Activities.

  5. REDUCTION OF THE STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE TO $89.00 PER SEMESTER
The level of the Student Activity Fee should be set to $89.00 per semester for the 2007-2008 academic year to be assessed to designated students, per Board of Regents policy.
