Consultative Committee Minutes
October 12, 2007

Present: Nancy Carpenter (XO), Judy Korn, Margaret Kuchenreuther, 
Alex Murphy, Jeff Ratliff-Crain

Absent:  Brad Deane (on leave), Pam Gades, Maggie Larson, Jennifer 
Zych Herrmann

Announcements:  Students have not yet been named to fill the vacant 
positions.  Judy will talk to Carol McCannon about filling the vacant 
USA seat.

Election of Chair:  The committee needs to elect a chair for the year 
but delayed that action once again until the next meeting because of 
lack of a quorum.  Margaret will continue to act as Chair.

Sabbatical and Single Semester leave deadlines:  Mention was made 
that these are fast approaching but have not been announced. 
Margaret will email Interim Dean Roland Guyotte about the need to 
make such an announcement.

Discussion of Constitution:  The committee had a wide-ranging 
discussion about the constitution.  The following topics were 
discussed:

* the redefinition of the role of Consultative Committee
* the lack of a Grievance Committee
* the structure of the Steering Committee
* the increased number of people needed to serve on committees under 
the new constitution
* the degree of change suggested by the new constitution

The committee came to the conclusion that it would be wise for the 
campus to have more opportunities for consultation about the proposed 
changes than the three forums that are currently scheduled.  More 
consultation would improve general knowledge about the proposed 
changes and potentially generate more participation and buy-in from 
the campus community, which will be needed if 75% of the Assembly 
must vote in favor of change.  Margaret will draft a note to the 
Executive Committee expressing this sentiment.
