Consultative Committee Meeting Friday, November 14, 2003 - 8:30AM Present: Joyce Amborn, Rebecca Webb, Lee Korby, Michelle Page (Chair), Brenda Boever, Margaret Kuchenreuther, Mary Zosel, Jeff Ratliff-Crain (XO), Bart Finzel, Reggie Davis Absent: David Wuolu, Kt Schwaderer, Kevin Ely Visitors: none The committee reviewed minutes for meetings held 10/31 and 11/7. Changes were made to clarify issues, then approved. It was agreed to append the Personnel Plan document presented by VC and Dean Schwaller to the 11/7/03 minutes. Scheduled visitors: Jim Mootz, Assoc. VC for Enrollment – Monday, Nov. 17 8:30. (enrollment) Chancellor Schuman and VC and Dean Schwaller – Friday, Nov 21 (fac. salaries) Sandy Olson-Loy, VC Student Affairs – December 5 Update on our memo: Re: Student Services Committee Chancellor Schuman responded, on behalf of the Executive Committee, to our memo outlining concerns raised in regard to the function of the Student Services Committee. As suggested by Schuman, the CC Chair, Michelle Page met directly with Rita Lambert, Chair of the Student Services Committee to outline our concerns about on going issues-most notably food services. She will contact Larry Christenson, chair of the dining sub-committee to work more proactively to resolve these issues. Update: international student housing Reggie Davis reported that several international students, contacted by Catholic Charities (owner of KeyRow apartments), are now required to verify their visa status and face possible rental rate increases on 12/1/03. Senator Mark Dayton’s office has been contacted to see if these changes in HUD policy are accurate, if this is a result of post 9/ll action, or if Catholic Charities is simply late in compliance to a policy previously in effect. Tom McRoberts, CIP Director and adviser to UMM international students is working with these students and has been contacted for additional information on this situation. Remaining questions: Can the University help if students are displaced? Is there vacant space on campus to offer as emergency housing? Discussion: Preparation for the Mootz visit regarding enrollment. Members also reported on the campus assembly announcement of our current enrollment figures. Concern is expressed on underlying on-going enrollment issues on campus and within the larger University. As the TC campus is one of UMM’s primary competitors, the collaborative atmosphere within the University appears to be eroding. Financial and other resources appear to be disportionately distributed to the TC campus. Jeff Ratliff-Crain reported on Senate’s discussion about "branding” and its impact on UMM. While this discussion also sounded very TC campus based, we need to find ways to turn this into a positive message for UMM. (suggestions: build coalition with allies within the University, curtail the (perceived) dismantling of the all-University concept, find ways to increase our visibility) Senate restructuring: Bert Ahern and Reggie Davis are members of this Task Force and will keep the CC apprised of implications for UMM constituencies. Budget Task Force: CC will discuss the process and determine how we can help facilitate communication of it to the campus community.
