Consultative Committee March 15, 2004 Present: Michelle Page (chair), Margaret Kuchenreuther, Brenda Boever, Rebecca Webb, Tim Brooks, Kevin Ely Absent: Bart Finzel, David Wuolu, Jeff Ratliff-Crain (XO), Joyce Amborn, Mary Zosel, Cendy Gonzales, Reggie Davis Guests: Greg Thorson, Bert Ahern Presentation of Faculty Affairs Committee proposal by Thorson and Ahern. The committee members present reached a consensus that they supported the proposal to establish a Faculty Affairs Committee for the following reasons: * Such a committee would have the power to recommend actions and policy to Campus Assembly and the Chancellor whereas Consultative Committee is not charged with these powers * The FAC would ease the workload of the Consultative Committee, which often deals with faculty concerns and issues * The FAC could serve as an information clearinghouse on faculty issues which could be helpful to a variety of committees on campus. Also, because of its narrow focus, FAC will be able to develop expertise on issues that affect faculty—thus, it will be able to provide knowledgeable input on these issues * The FAC could help provide a strong focus for faculty issues and discussions * As currently envisioned, members would be elected from within academic divisions, student government, etc. As an elected committee, the FAC would likely be perceived as an independent committee of advocates where faculty voices could be heard. The Consultative Committee wished to advise that, if such a committee were established, the committee membership be reminded that it represents/works with issues pertaining to all faculty (including adjunct, contract, temporary, etc.) as well as P&A issues. In addition, it is necessary to fully clarify how the committee fits within the existing campus organizational structure (i.e., is this in a similar category to the other assembly committees, to elected committees, a whole new category?) before the proposal goes to Campus Assembly for a vote. Finally, the document we reviewed did not state how the committee chair would be selected—this could be stated somewhere in the proposal.
