Essential skills for success in higher education. Introduction to computing technology, writing, and math skills. Thought processes and standards of academic dialogue.   Academic and social skills needed for transition from high school to college.

 

Rationale (see instructions):

 

We think "Thought processes and standards of academic dialogue" is too abstract and general.  Any class can be said to have some components of thought processes and academic dialogue.  Gateway is designed as a

transitional program, helping students with cultural and academic transition from high school to college.  We think the new sentence describe the course better.

Basic learning and thinking skills: procedures for acquiring knowledge and conducting academic inquiry; formulating and evaluating ideas, arguments and abstract principles. Introduction to elements of the learning process. Assessment of individual approaches and development of individual strategies for learning. This course begins the 5th week of the semester.

 

Rationale (see instructions):

By starting the class in the fifth week, we hope to give students who might need help a chance to realize that they need services.  Faculty will also have a chance to identify students and encourage them to take the course.

The # has been removed because it is instructor consent only and all directed studies require approval by both the Instructor and Division Chair or Dean depending on the home of the Directed Study.

An educational experience in a work environment providing field application for the student's theoretical classroom learning experiences. The prior learning internship, such as in social service or business settings,

occurred prior to the student's matriculation. The prior learning is documented and combined with faculty-directed new learning, with credit awarded for both.
