Course Revision #1
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 1051.
Introduction to College Learning Skills. (4 cr; counts toward the 60-cr general ed requirements;
prereq participation in Gateway Program; offered summer only; S-N only)
Essential
skills for success in higher education. Introduction to computing technology,
writing, and math skills. Thought processes and standards of academic
dialogue. Academic and social skills needed for transition from high
school to college.
Rationale
(see instructions):
We think "Thought
processes and standards of academic dialogue" is too abstract and
general. Any class can be said to have some components of thought
processes and academic dialogue. Gateway is designed as a
transitional program, helping
students with cultural and academic transition from high school to
college. We think the new sentence describe the course better.
Course Revision #2
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 1061
- Learning to Learn (SS)
(2.0 cr; Prereq-#; S-N only, fall, spring, every year)
Basic learning and thinking skills: procedures for acquiring knowledge and
conducting academic inquiry; formulating and evaluating ideas, arguments and
abstract principles. Introduction to elements of the learning process.
Assessment of individual approaches and development of individual strategies
for learning. This course begins the 5th week of the semester.
Rationale (see instructions):
By starting the class in the
fifth week, we hope to give students who might need help a chance to realize
that they need services. Faculty will also have a chance to identify
students and encourage them to take the course.
Course Revision #3
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 3100.
Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science. (1-4 cr; offered when feasible)
Studies of topics,
applying expertise from various social science disciplines, e.g., women in the
social sciences.
Rationale
(see instructions):
IS x993, Directed Study would
serve the same purpose. Past
enrollment history shows students rarely
register for this course .
Course Revision #4
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 3705 – Peer Tutoring Theory Peer
Tutoring in College I (SS)

strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 3710 - Peer Tutoring in College II (1.0 cr; Prereq-3705; fall, spring, every year)

Rationale
(see instructions):

Course Revision #6
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 3893
- Prior Learning Directed Study
(1.0 - 4.0 cr [max 999.0 cr]; Prereq approved
directed study form, [#]; repeatable; fall, spring, every year)
Individualized learning project combining prior learning with faculty-directed
new learning, awarding academic credit for both. (When content is
discipline-related, discipline designation will appear on transcript and credit
may count toward appropriate general education requirement category.)
Rationale
(see instructions):
This phrase has been added to all Directed Studies in ECAS and PeopleSoft to
replace the #. This eliminates any confusion and covers all levels of consent
required. The # has been removed because it is instructor consent only and all
directed studies require approval by both the Instructor and Division Chair or
Dean depending on the home of the Directed Study.
Course Revision #7
Give complete UMM catalog entry (deletions in
strikethru font, additions underlined)(see instructions)
IS 3896 - Prior Learning Internship
(1-16 cr; repeatable; Prereq approved internship form, [#];
S-N only)
An educational experience in a work environment providing field application for
the student's theoretical classroom learning experiences. The prior learning
internship, such as in social service or business settings,
occurred
prior to the student's matriculation. The prior learning is documented and
combined with faculty-directed new learning, with credit awarded for both.
Rationale
(see instructions):
This phrase
has been added to all Internships in ECAS and PeopleSoft to replace the #. This
eliminates any confusion and covers all levels of consent required. The # has
been removed because it is instructor consent only and all internships require
approval by both the Instructor and Division Chair or Dean depending on the
home of the Internship.
