Description:

Class Voice is required for all first-semester voice students. It prepares students for private study in voice and there will be an opportunity to audition into private voice study. Students learn basic vocal technique, how to learn a song, principles of diction, basic musicianship, and sing prepared pieces in class.

RATIONALE: CLASS VOICE WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ANY STUDENT STUDYING COLLEGE VOICE FOR THE FIRST TIME. THIS IS BECAUSE AT PRESENT WE HAVE NO REAL "GATEKEEPING" ON VOICE LESSONS AND OFTEN THERE ARE PEOPLE STUDYING WHO DO NOT HAVE THE REQUISITE SKILLS AND TRAINING TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF A PRIVATE LESSON. THIS IS A WASTE OF RESOURCES FOR THE DEPARTMENT AND THE UNIVERSITY. THE AIM OF THIS CLASS IS TO GIVE THE STUDENTS THESE SKILLS.
