Assessment
and Goals
:

Assessment will be done using reading and concepts quizzes; contrapuntal writing assignments, and polyphonic analyses of Palestrina and Bach among others. The goal is to further student's understanding and skills in writing and analyzing music linearly, that is, melody against melody.

Rationale for
Changes or
Exceptions
:

18TH CENTURY COUNTERPOINT IS THE STUDY OF POLYPHONY OR THE STUDY OF MELODY AGAINST MELODY. IT IS A STANDARD COURSE IN THE MUSIC CURRICULUM THAT USUALLY FOLLOWS BASIC MUSIC THEORY COURSES. SIXTEENTH CENTURY COUNTERPOINT IS OFTEN LINKED TO THE STUDY OF THE CONTRAPUNTAL TECHNIQUES OF PALESTRINA. EIGHTEENTH CENTURY COUNTERPOINT USUALLY INVOLVES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, POLYPHONIC WORKS BY J. S. BACH.
