Exploration of infectious disease from a variety of topics ranging from the basic biology of pathogens (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and prions) to the social cost of disease on a global scale. Other topics include immunology, antibiotic and vaccine development, epidemiology and public health. Laboratory component focusing on microbiological techniques and epidemiological modeling.  Summer Scholars course.

THE GOAL OF THIS COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COLLEGE-LEVEL BIOLOGY CONCEPTS IN THE CONTEXT OF AN EXCITING, CURRENT TOPIC: REEMERGING INFECTIOUS DISEASES.  ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE WILL BE BASED ON TWO EXAMS, ONE 3-PAGE PAPER, AN ORAL PRESENTATION AND A POSTER REPORTING THE RESULTS OF A GROUP LABORATORY PROJECT.
