Description:

Same as Fren 1312. Study of the ways that history, myth, and storytelling intertwine to create Moroccan identity. Examination of the entwining of history into myth. Study of the different methods of telling stories through orality, literature, weaving, ceramics, and music. Taught in English and all coursework is done in English. Students who wish to apply this course to their French major must enroll in the French equivalent of this course, Fren 1312.

History Information:

This course is a study-abroad program that encourages students to visit a French-speaking country other than France. It does not replace any other courses but is an addition to other study-abroad options. The emphasis on storytelling will allow me to broach many different subjects, such as history, ceramics, weaving and storytelling, which all align nicely with various sites to be visited in Morocco.

This course meets the Discipline goal of encouraging more UMM students to explore Francophone countries.

This course will be structured as Field Work, where students will visit many cultural and historical sites in Morocco to learn about the ways that these sites contribute to modern Moroccan identity. Students will also read several books and articles to enhance what they learn on-site. Finally, they will keep a journal of what they learn at each site, and they will write two papers.

I expect that this course may attract many students from across many disciplines at UMM, especially those who are interested in learning about Africa.
