Study of prescriptive and descriptive grammars and their application to writing; theories of grammar; nature of language, including phonology, syntax, semantics, language acquisition, and language variation and change.

Study of the historical development of the English language and its current structure; topics covered include language variation and change, the social history of language, phonology, syntax, semantics, the development of English grammar, prescriptive versus descriptive grammar, and contemporary theories of grammar.

The existing course description was written by a previous instructor and does not fully reflect the course as the current instructor wishes to teach it; the revision, moreover, better meets the new teaching licensure objectives for the course. The topics covered in the course largely remain the same, but with a different guiding emphasis; the course description has, primarily, been re-organized to stress what was before last in the list of course topics.
