Comparative study of government and politics of contemporary Africa, with special attention to state/society relations, interaction of politics and economic development, political institutions, and conflict.

This new course is made possible by the addition of a new tenure-line faculty member in Political Science with expertise in Comparative Politics.

Please state clearly and briefly the GOALS of this course.

The course is designed to introduce students to the politics of Africa. Students will be exposed to the important literature in the area and will be expected to synthesize and apply their understanding of these readings.

How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?

Students will be given essay exams approximately three times during the semester that measure their ability to understand and analyze the assigned readings. Students will also complete a paper that requires them to critique those readings and apply them to contemporary Latin African politics.
