Interdisciplinary approach to experiment design and analysis

characterization using instrumental methods. Instruction in

use of the scientific literature and scientific report writing. (6

The application of chemical equilibria to chemical analysis

complexometric titrations, introduction to electrochemical and

spectrophotometric analyses and separations. (3 hrs lect, 3 hrs lab)

The organic chemistry of biological systems. Includes the

chemistry of amino acids, polypeptides, polynucleotides,

phosphate groups, and coenzymes, as well as the study of

enzymatic catalysis and the elucidation of biosynthetic

pathways.

 

Discussion of the theory of enzyme catalysis and catalytic antibodies, experimental determination of catalytic mechanisms for a variety of organic reactions in biological systems, and elucidation of biosynthetic pathways. The course involves extensive readings in the primary literature.
