Engl 3153f. Gothic Literature. (Hum; 4 cr; prereq 1131, two from 2201, 2202, 2211, or 2212; not offered 2004-05)

The cultural origins of gothic literature in tension with the neoclassical values of eighteenth-century Britain and its persistent influence over the next two centuries (including its relationship to modern horror fiction and film). Emphasis on the ways gothic tales encode cultural anxieties about gender, class, and power.


II. Rationale (see instructions):

A 3000 level course designed as a specialized topic for advanced students of literature. Intended to develop students’ awareness of literary and cultural history, and to encourage them to perceive the social foundations for literary conventions and practices. The course will sharpen critical skills introduced in lower-level English courses and add to their knowledge of literary traditions.

To build on students’ interpretive reading and writing skills introduced in the prerequisite English major courses, including textual analysis and the articulation of original ideas in writing; to create or develop awareness of historical and cultural crises as they are represented in literature; to enhance research and oral presentation skills.


How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?


Students will write several extended essays throughout the semester analyzing literary texts and cultural, political, and historical contexts. Students will engage in a research project designed to teach them how to explore the current scholarly conversations about their chosen topic. We will assess the ability of students to render complex arguments about the subject matter orally and on paper.
