Engl 3156s. Modern Irish Literature. (Hum; 4 cr; prereq 1131, two from 2201, 2202, 2211, or 2212; not offered 2003-04)

The poetry, fiction, and drama of Irish writers from 1890-1927, with attention to the ways that literature shaped a national identity.

 

II. Rationale (see instructions):

A new 3000-level course designed as a specialized topic for advanced students of literature who have had at least two of our survey courses. Develops students’ awareness of relationships between literary and cultural history

To build on students’ interpretative reading and writing skills introduced in the prerequisite survey courses, including textual analysis and writing literary criticism; to develop students’ awareness of relationships between literary and cultural history.

 

How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?

 

Students will write several papers taking various critical approaches, lead discussions, and give reports of papers in progress.
