Engl 3342. Chicanas/os and Latinas/os in Film and Literature. (HDiv; 4 cr.; prereq 1131, two from 2201, 2202, 2211 or 2212, or #; offered when feasible)

Focus on how Chicanas/os and Latinas/os have been represented in Hollywood films and how Chicana/o and Latina/o writers, actors, and filmmakers have portrayed their people, culture, and various issues in films and writings..


II. Rationale (see instructions):

To expose students to stereotypes and limited roles for Chicanas/as and Latinas/os in Hollywood films and to show how Chicana/o and Latina/o writers and filmmakers have responded by creating their own works. This course will serve as an elective students may take to fulfill a 3000 level requirement for English, Latin American Studies, or Women’s Studies majors.

Please state clearly and briefly the GOALS of this course.


To further an understanding of depictions of Chicanas/os and Latinas/os in Hollywood films and in their own films and writings.

To draw attention to how the different media, film and drama in particular, creatively portray issues and cultures in different ways.

To enhance students’ critical thinking and critical reading skills at an advanced level.


How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?


Several extended essays and an exam will be required. Students will research assigned topics and present the information in a formal presentation to the class. I will assess the ability of students to render complex arguments about the subject matter in oral and written forms.
