Fren 3091. French Poetry: Survey, Analysis, Creation. (Hum. 4 cr. prereq 3011 offered fall 2003)

A survey of French poetry from the Middle Ages to the present, with emphasis on 19th and 20th centuries. Revisiting the fundamentals of French poetry: rhyme, meter, and the evolution of poetic form. Mastery of the analyse de texte method, the arts of recitation, pastiche, and poetic creation.

At present, poetry is the only major genre not represented within the French curriculum.

Please state clearly and briefly the GOALS of this course.

 

1) Further students’ understanding of French verse and the historical evolution of poetry in both form and content 2) Improve pronunciation as well as advance reading skills by enhancing vocabulary and diversifying the syntactic patterns that students are able to decode 3) Enhance students’ understanding of the relationship of art to society.

 

How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?

 

Students will be asked to 1) write 2 analyses de texte (5-7pp. each) 2) write a pastiche 3) perform a formal recitation of a poem 4) submit original poetry in French. Each assignment = 20% of final grade
