PHYS 1053s. Introduction to Stars, Galaxies, and Cosmology. (Sci; 4 cr)

Gravity and electromagnetic radiation; nuclear physics; stellar properties; stellar evolution; galaxies; quasars; and cosmology. Stars and constellations of the winter sky. (4 hrs lect)

II. Rationale (see instructions):

This course expands the opportunities for general education students to study astronomy. The course will emphasize stellar evolution, galactic astronomy, and cosmology to a much greater extent than the existing astronomy course. The observatory will be used for observations of stars, nebulae, clusters, and galaxies.

III. Other Course Information

First semester to be offered:

Spring 2004

Principal Faculty Sponsor(s):

IV. Assessment Information

Please state clearly and briefly the GOALS of this course.

The goals of this course are to provide the students with a knowledge of 1. stars and stellar evolution including basic nuclear physics, 2. the Milky Way galaxy, 3. galactic morphologies and dynamics, 4. an introduction to modern cosmology, and 5. the stars and constellations of the winter sky. Students will have the opportunity to make observations of stars, start clusters, nebulae, and galaxies using the observatory.

How will you ASSESS the success of this course in achieving the GOALS described above?

The course will include astronomical observations, homework, quizzes, and tests to measure the success of the students in comprehending the material of the course.
