CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
FOR 2002-03
The Curriculum Committee (CC) held 15 regular meetings during the academic year 2002-03. There were ten (10) meetings during fall semester, and five (5) meetings during spring semester.
This was a catalog year. Several changes were made to each division. Catalog changes were presented in the order of Humanities, Science & Math, Social Sciences, Education and IS & CE, allowed two weeks for each Division, finished on November 13, 2002.
First Year Seminar Recommendations: Discussed the proposal submitted by
the FYS Steering Committee. CC
accepted the proposal made by the FYS Steering Committee and will move forward
with their recommendations and clarifications. This proposal will be sent to Campus Assembly
Graduation
Standards: Brenda Boever had sent out
graduation standards information from the project she worked on with Ruth
Thielke last spring. This
information will be used by high schools and the college to advise students who
attend UMM under the Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) to determine how
UMM courses will be used to meet high school graduation requirements.
African American Studies Minor Proposal: A revised version of the African American Studies
Minor that was just approved by Campus Assembly was distributed. The minor would not be in the next
catalog because it will not get to the Regents until February 2003, at the
earliest.
The Big Idea: Schuman addressed the Curriculum Committee to explain a new proposed
program for UMM that is currently called “The Big Idea”. This
program would provide the opportunity for every student here at UMM to study
abroad during May term after their sophomore year. Schuman went on to explain how the program would operate and
what financial implications would arise. This idea came from the International
Programs Committee and if we do it UMM will be the only institution in America
that would have this type of program. Schuman explained that this is a major logistical
enterprise and the magnitude of it has not been underestimated. Possible
funding could come from three sources, an endowment, a grant for a 2-3 year
term or funding from a modest increase in tuition/legislative allocation. The people in Admissions who have
been consulted believe that the program will be a boon for admissions, and that
careful external testing will be done to verify that impression. Implementing this program or a
variant thereof will have a large positive impact on our international
programs. Schuman stated that
there are two issues that keep arising; one is that it is not a good idea to
let them pick a place and that UMM should pick the place where they will
travel. The other concern is that we should let the students go to any of three
or four places we suggest.
