Subject: Fall Faculty Workshop, September 16, 1997

The 1997 UMM Fall Faculty Workshop is set for Tuesday, September 16 at the Arrowwood Radisson Resort in Alexandria, Minnesota from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

This year's workshop is entitled Seeing the Forest as Well as the Trees: Assessment to Improve Student Learning. In this interactive workshop, faculty will consider various approaches to this topic, including assessment of classroom teaching, of the major, and of a campus-wide curriculum.

The facilitator for our workshop is Dr. Dan Rice, Director of the Office of Instructional Development at the University of North Dakota. A graduate of Dakota Wesleyan University, Dr. Rice earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of North Dakota. He recently co-authored an article entitled "Developing the Assessment Plan at a State University: Strategy and Lessons," which appeared in A Collection of Papers on Self-Study and Institutional Improvement 1994, published by the Commision on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. A leader in the field of faculty development, he chaired the Steering Committee of the Bush Regional Collaboration in Faculty Development from 1994-1995, and has a strong interest in college assessment programs aimed at achieving a higher quality of student learning.

This year's one-day workshop schedule allows ample opportunity for faculty to engage in informal discussion and social activities. The Arrowwood Resort is known for its spacious accommodations, excellent food, and beautiful surroundings. Although the workshop officially ends at 4:30, it is encouraged that you stay awhile at this beautiful resort to continue informal discussions over the dinner hour, either at the Lake Cafe or at Rafter's Lounge. Sports enthusiasts may want to bring their golf clubs or tennis racket for a game after the workshop, take a stroll on the walking path that encircles the grounds, or go horseback riding.

We invite you to register for the Workshop by completing and returning the enclosed registration no later than August 29. Late registrants will be accommodated as space is available. If you need transportation to and from the Arrowwood, please indicate this on your registration card. A van accommodating up to 15 people will be leaving Morris Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m., and returning from Alexandria in the evening. To help our speaker tailor his workshop to our specific needs, we also ask that you fill out and return the survey included in this mailing. Confirmation of your registration will be sent to you, along with more detailed information and directions to the resort. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Faculty Center for Learning and Teaching at (320) 589-6273.

New faculty are especially encouraged to come to the Workshop. Do plan to join your colleagues in September in the beautiful lakes region of Minnesota!
