The fall 2002 assessment of freshman advising administered in December through FYS is attached. 413 students responded. 96.9% knew the name of their adviser! Though freshmen are required to meet with advisers only twice during fall term (during orientation and spring registration), 30.9% met with their advisers additional times.
As in previous years, the results are positive. The percentage of students who 'agreed' or 'strongly agreed' with most questions remained about the same, ranging from 71.4% to the high 80%'s in questions 3-8. However, 27.2% disagreed with the statement (#5) "My adviser took time to become acquainted with me," and 22.3% disagreed with (#6) "My adviser discusses my academic goals and ways to meet them."
We continue to improve in the two consistently low-scoring "expectations" categories (#10 & 11). 10. My adviser explained what is expected of me...up from 54.4% to 59.4%; 33.6 % disagreed. 11. My adviser explained what I can expect from my adviser... up from 61.6% to 64.8% ; 29.1% disagreed.
The high percentage of students who disagreed suggests advisees want to know what to expect from advisers as well as what you expect from them. Annual planning is a time to make sure they know!
